THE GOSPELS OF THE GASH - 09.30.10

"I am so afraid of people's words. They describe so distinctly everything:
And this they call dog and that they call house,
here the start and there the end.
I worry about their mockery with words,
they know everything, what will be, what was;
no mountain is still miraculous;
and their house and yard lead right up to God.
I want to warn and object: Let the things be!
I enjoy listening to the sound they are making.
But you always touch: and they hush and stand still.
That's how you kill."
— Rainer Maria Rilke

The weather here has been grey and shitty all week. actually, for about two weeks, with a couple of bright, beautiful summer-like days tucked in between.
my grand plans have fallen short, but this is nothing new. during the last two weeks, i've been delayed in shipping a variety of orders for three primary reasons. the first is financially-oriented (what else is new?), and the second is far more logistical in nature; i had to order new supplies (polybags, blank cdrs and blank cassettes), and so have been prevented from producing several items. however, that issue has slowly begun to be remedied, as these items are already arriving piecemeal. the third reason is the fact that i had a paper due today for my HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY class, and it was weighing very heavily and causing me immense stress to try to balance everything that i had to do. i handed in a pretty barebones rough draft today, but at least the bulk of that stress has been lifted. next week will prove to be far more productive than the past two.
that is not to say that i've been entirely idle during this time; two weeks ago i moved part of my recording setup to LAST STOP to put down vocal tracks for the love is nothing. release, and have slowly begun to get some material down. additionally, my friends in TOURNAMENT have selected a track on which they will be collaborating, and some work has already been done in that regard. unfortunately, the release is not yet ready to ship, but it's far closer than it's been before, and i hope to get things wrapped up as soon as possible.
i've also been able to work a bit on formulating parts of my live THEOLOGIAN set for the forthcoming tour in november. more on that below.

Some very exciting news: just this week, i confirmed that ANNIHILVS will have the singular pleasure of releasing the final vinyl ep by my friends VVLTVRE in the early part of 2011. this release will signal the label's transition from the cd format into vinyl, and will be exclusively distributed by CRUCIAL BLAST on vinyl and as a digital download. i'll post more news on this as it comes together.

The THEOLOGIAN+ADERLATING preorder shirt artwork has been submitted and approved, so they should be in fairly soon. Mories has created amazing new artwork for the release.

I am pleased to announce that preorders for the THEOLOGIAN+FOUR PI MOVEMENT release are now available:
FOUR PI MOVEMENT is currently the solo project of Greg Vaneck (PROMETHEUS BURNING), an improvisational modular noise/power electronics analog monster of heated low-end distortion and raging high-end shrieks. Shredded through the teeth of THEOLOGIAN, the material takes on a totalitarian aspect, crushing rhythms reminiscent of an army of death marching on your city to burn your children and rape your women.
FOUR PI MOVEMENT tshirt comes with a 60 minute cassette, featuring one side of exclusive material from FOUR PI MOVEMENT, and one side of collaborative tracks constructed by THEOLOGIAN using FOUR PI source material. Limited 40 copies.

resisting the urge while indulging the urge to respond

08.13.09

changes in brain chemistry emerge as dreams of a future that could never possibly come to pass.

the perfect life of happiness

married to a psychotic cunt

smiling we pose for a photograph

i looked younger but more mature than i've ever looked, we looked happy together, devoid of the selfishness she exhibits in real life. we looked perfect together, surrounded by smiling friends, elegantly dressed in our perfect apartment. low ceilings, too low for people as tall as we are, little windows where the cats can come and go as they please, white walls and lots of sunlight.
the place for a perfect life together

in spite of her insanity and disregard for anyone's feelings but her own, my mind yearns for a life with her.

the poison of who i really am pulses between the cells of my brain tissue. her smile, her hair, our happiness is a lie that my mind manufactures, it's been more than a year since i had the energy to feel anything but hatred for her, the total disappointment she planted inside my soul rests within me and waits to administer its venom in the form of dreams such as this one.

memories from a future that will never come to pass...

THE GOSPELS OF THE GASH - 09.11.2010

"If God were suddenly condemned to live the life which He has inflicted upon men, He would kill Himself."
- Alexandre Dumas

Last night, i was fortunate enough to be able to attend a screening of Frankie Latina's brilliant film, MODUS OPERANDI, which premiered at the IFC Center in NYC.
The film was presented by Sasha Grey, who should require no introduction to most of you. I've been in contact with Sasha for about three years now, as we're fans of each others' respective works. I was able to finally meet Sasha in person after all this time and I was pretty nervous about it. However, as expected, the circumstances of the event were not conducive to much conversation. When my date and i showed up, my worst fear came true, and everybody who i talked to who worked at the theater was willing to acknowledge that i was supposed to have two tickets waiting for me, as i was told there was neither a guestlist, nor tickets put aside for me. a few minutes of feeling bummed and a couple of text messages later, and a lady in a green dress came outside, calling my name. Phew!
A moment later, Sasha and i were face to face, and i hugged her hello, introducing her to my date and handing her a package containing copies of the STUDY FOR A THEATER OF CRUELTY special edition, MAXIMUM BITTERNESS HAS BEEN ACHIEVED, FROM BEYOND AN OBFUSCATED CONSTELLATION, THE FINAL PAGE, and WRETCH. She then had to take the stage to address the audience and present the film, so we stood in the doorway trying to catch a glimpse of the action inside. i spotted Danny Trejo, one of the film's stars, and giggled. I'd just seen MACHETE earlier in the week. A theater employee said we should try the main entrance to the room, so we went around the corner and walked in. The room was almost filled to capacity, but after standing awkwardly at the back with some other folks, while Sasha and the director Frankie Latina talked a bit about how the film came about and how Sasha got involved, we found some seats and settled in as the lights went down.
The film itself was a hilarious, convoluted and brilliant criminal/espionage saga, done in the tradition of exploitation cinema. It tells the story of an ex-CIA man, who we first see drowning in desperation and grief after his wife is murdered in what was meant to be his own assassination. He is reactivated and assigned to retrieve two briefcases from men who have killed to possess it, with the promise that when he hands them over, he'll be told the identity of the man responsible for his wife's death. Chaos ensues. I highly recommend it to any fan of violence, intrigue and camp film.

CRUCIAL BLAST has announced preorders for the debut full-length by THEOLOGIAN, THE FURTHER I GET FROM YOUR STAR, THE LESS LIGHT I FEEL ON MY FACE. the album is reviewed very favourably in the current (October) issue of DECIBEL magazine, with an 8 out of 10 rating (the new "SWANS" album received a 5, which mirrors my own impressions). here is a slightly edited excerpt: "...a perfectly timed backdrop for... self interrogation and/or personality change."
I will have copies of both the standard and special editions of this release, but i'm not sure when or how many copies, so i suggest you deal directly with the label if you want to get your hands on this release sooner than later.

Now that the THEOLOGIAN+INSWARM preorders have all shipped, and the huge stack of orders that had been heaped upon my shoulders has dwindled down to nothing, i'm pleased to announce the next collaborative release that is in progress:

NOW AVAILABLE FOR PREORDER:
THEOLOGIAN+ADERLATING. A CHORUS OF BEAUTIES SING TO ME THROUGH SLIT THROATS-PREORDER PACKAGE
GNAW THEIR TONGUES sideproject ADERLATING provides THEOLOGIAN with source material for a descent into black abysses. Sickening strings gurgle over frightening, mournful drones that echo from within the bottomless void at the core of humankind.
ADERLATING tshirt accompanied by 60 minute cassette.
Limited to 40 copies.

Next in line will be: THEOLOGIAN+FOUR PI MOVEMENT. THE DESTROYER-PREORDER PACKAGE

Select items from the APEX XIII preorder will begin shipping in roughly two weeks, along with copies of the CODE LEECH preorder.
Fade from INSWARM will be mastering the tracks for CODE LEECH, but we're having some trouble getting started on that process.

With today being September 11, there are obviously a lot of emotionally charged discussions taking place online. i was lucky enough to be pried out of the house today by a friend before i could get in any deeper. one of the more unfortunate aspects of Facebook is that it gives us the opportunity to see the political leanings of certain friends, whose opinions on certain matters would otherwise be better left unknown. my response to some of what i've seen today was to construct the following mix:

DJ LEECH - DAY OF WRATH - 09.11.2010

Gnaw Their Tongues > Prayer for the Bloodred Rain
MZ.412 > Satan Jugend
No Festival of Light > Enter to the Realm of Satan IV
Death Squad > Fuck God (live)
Brandkommando > God Hates Us
Nekrasov > Chant the Name of God in a Thousand Languages Until All is Blood and Feces
Haus Arafna > Last Dream of Jesus
Aderlating > Cut off my Penis in Praise of Black Satan
Black Sun > Disintegrate to Khrist
Tribe of Circle > The Aryan Christ
Xasthur > Shrine of Failure
Sewer Goddess > Sewer Goddess Pt 1

The final piece of news i have to share has to do with the upcoming East Coast tour in November. i'd originally planned to post a more complete itinerary, with links for every act along the way, but it seems like some loose ends still need to be tied up. fortunately, we have some time yet, but i admit to having let certain things slip by me during the last couple of weeks due to a bit of a dip in my personal velocity. i'm trying to regain a foothold, and this post will hopefully help to propel me back into action.

THEOLOGIAN. THE FURTHER I GET FROM YOUR STAR, THE LESS LIGHT I FEEL ON MY FACE CD NOW AVAILABLE FOR PREORDER FROM CRUCIAL BLAST

CRUCIAL BLAST

Theologian debuts here with it's first widely available release through Crucial Blast, The Further I Get From Your Star, The Less Light I Feel On My Face, an abyssal blast of nebulous black electronics and subterranean death-synth. We are releasing the cd in a deluxe, six-panel DVD style digipack (along the same lines as the last Navicon Torture Technologies release Gospels Of The Gash) as well as an exlcusive Theologian shirt design, a cd/shirt/sticker/buttons package, and a limited edition, hand-numbered silkscreened poster for The Further I Get From Your Star designed by Leech and professionally printed by Contagious Graphics. The poster will either be shipped alone, rolled in a tube, or as part of the cd/shirt/poster bundle option.

The exclusive The Further I Get From Your Star, The Less Light I Feel On My Face shirt design is printed on black Gildan 100% cotton shirts by Mammoth Screenprinting, with white discharge printing on the front.

All items will ship out by the end of September (if not sooner) from Crucial Blast.

The Further I Get From Your Star, The Less Light I Feel On My Face is the latest chapter from New York power electronics/synth-death demon Leech. This is the first full-length, widely available release from Leech's new incarnation as Theologian, which picks up where he left off with his long-running project Navicon Torture Technologies. Over the past decade, Navicon Torture Technologies blurred the edges of power electronics and dark industrial on albums like The Church Of Dead Girls (2002, Malignant), VTERVS (2008, NCC) and The Gospels Of The Gash (2009, Malignant) before ceasing operations in 2009. Now reconstituted as Theologian, Leech again explores the further realms of experience with a new form of blackened synth dread that combines many of the sounds that made up NTT's crushing electronic attack (Swedish death industrial, classic power electronics, harsh noise, powernoise) with a new level of heaviness and droneological power.
Following a series of small-run collaborations (with Wilt, Steve Moore, and The Vomit Arsonist) that were released on Leech's own label Annihilvs, Theologian delivers it's first full-length album, a seven-track descent into roaring, cosmic drone and howling black hole electronics, colossal industrial soundscapes and grim low-end heaviness. The opening track "Zero" sounds like early space music (Schulze, Tangerine Dream, etc) being blasted through massive bass-heavy sound system directly into the Void; its followed by the sprawling twenty-four minute "In Times of Need, We All Go Against Our Natures", which starts with distant twilight factory rumblings and murky motorized reverberations, then slowly reveals a bleak, shadowy realm of grimy minor-key synths slowly drifting underneath the industrial buzz and hum, both mysterious, and immensely grim. After a few minutes, eerie choral voicings begin to appear, and the sound continues to slowly develop into a vast expanse of lush isolationist ambience, a simple three-note melody repeating over and over deep beneath the peals of muted electronic tones, distant grinding, hushed whispering, and oncoming waves of black feedback, becoming darker and more menacing as it goes on. Then a male voice appears off in the background, awash in delay, forming these haunting multi-part harmonies that drift beneath the smoldering electronic noise; after a while, it almost sounds like something from Sigur Ros slowly falling into Stygian blackness, the singing becoming warped and fractured as the swirling black synths corrode and decay into a buzzing, churning field of irradiated drone, getting heavier, more distorted, until the final eight minutes finally form into a wash of blackened doom-drone heaviness surrounded with icy synth pulses, eerie choral voices, grinding industrial dread, and fearsome distorted screams, a sort of pitch-black power electronics dirge...
That epic track may be the album's heaviest moment, but the rest of Your Star is just as bleak and lightless. Another massive slab of murky, molten ambience unfolds with "Unfamiliar Skies", where sheets of glacial string-like drones swirl beneath blown-out synthesizer rumble, and a simple rhythmic throb pulses at the black rotting center, surrounded by clouds of crackling static, and gradually becoming streaked with oscillating sine waves and heavy gusts of black distortion. The title track is blighted isolationist drone shattered by the burning descent of black stars falling from the skies, underscored by a gorgeous, wavering blissed-out drone; halfway through, it shifts gears into hallucinatory, dark wave-infected power electronics with ultra-distorted demonic/robotic vocals and super dense walls of deteriorating drone and sepulchral synthesizer. The remaining tracks move through roaring melodic drift, wailing distorted vocals, and seriously acerbic distortion that combine into mantras of narcotized power electronics, throbbing black machine pulsations, chthonic ambience laced with metallic ringing, eerie sublimated melodies and deep low-end bone-rattling churn, at times sounding really soundtrack-esque, even resembling a more apocalyptic, deformed take on John Carpenter's film score work at times. The hidden final track "The Fragility Of The Male Ego..." finishes the album with a crushing industrial dirge sculpted out of droning feedback and overdriven distortion, as caustic as anything that's come before, with a very subtle dark wave quality lurking beneath the scorched electronics that makes this sound somewhat like hearing a Projekt Records track being remixed by a Japanese noise extremist.
Like Navicon, Theologian combines several different disciplines of industrial into a signature sound, a doom-laden hybrid of death industrial and power electronics and black ambience that's spliced with a constant melodic presence; the music is harsh, often hellish, but accentuated by an icy, desolate beauty that gives The Further I Get From Your Star, The Less Light I Feel On My Face it’s unique, abyssal vibe.
The album is being released on Cd in deluxe dvd-style digipack packaging with striking artwork and visual design by Leech, and as a digital download.

Another Try for a Windows Phone, but It’s Still Clunky

If you’ve never heard of a Windows Mobile phone, or never particularly cared what kind of software runs on your phone, prepare yourself. In the coming months, Microsoft will release a steady drumbeat of ads intended to make you want a device powered by its software.

Related

Should you care? Probably. Should you make a Windows phone your priority? Not necessarily.
If you already have a phone that runs Windows Mobile and want to upgrade, the new 6.5 version will improve your life slightly. Otherwise, other mobile phones are probably a better bet.
Windows phones have been around for years, mostly competing with BlackBerrys for the allegiance of business users. But while BlackBerry crossed over into the consumer realm with more user-friendly phones, Windows Mobile remained in its corporate cube, because of devices that could be so frustrating to use that few people would choose one without a corporate mandate.
For much of the last year, Microsoft has been saying that its new mobile software upgrade would significantly simplify the user experience. And the upgrade does simplify things, but not much.
Instead of poking around with a stylus, Windows now features icons that are big enough to hit with your fingertip. That helps you navigate the phone’s software menu and interact with various programs, but when it comes to the one application smartphone owners use the most — Web browsing — it falls far short.
Sure, Windows 6.5 supports Adobe Flash technology, so you can watch videos on more Web sites than you would on an iPhone, which cannot use Flash. But unlike the iPhone or the Palm Pre, a Windows phone still lacks a multitouch screen, so you can’t pinch and pull the display to a chosen size. Instead, you press buttons and sliders in a scheme that sorely lacks precision.
A Microsoft executive, Greg Sullivan, said that in company tests, users were able to complete tasks more easily on its new software than on any other mobile browser. Using a new Toshiba TGO1 phone that Microsoft sent me, I tried to log into my Gmail account for five minutes and failed.
Likewise, instead of simply connecting you to a free Wi-Fi hot spot, Windows forces you into a three-step decision tree that would make a technician’s heart sing, but would strike fear into the heart of just about anyone else who just wants to log on. (Quick: what’s your phone’s “EAP Type?”)
I also tested a new HTC Pure ($150 after a $50 rebate and a two-year contract), an AT&T Windows Mobile 6.5 device. It was slicker than the Toshiba, because HTC has, like some other hardware manufacturers, customized Windows Mobile with its own interface.
HTC’s “TouchFlo” software gives you an optional home screen for quick checks on weather, messages and the like. It’s helpful, sure, but the core flaws of the Windows software remain.
Perhaps the biggest difference between an old Windows device and one running version 6.5 is the app store, which is available only to those with new phones. (Each major carrier has at least one.)
The Windows Mobile Marketplace has only around 350 apps to start, which is a bit of a shock, since there are more than 20,000 Windows Mobile apps available online. More should come to the Marketplace fairly quickly, but it has much ground to make up on BlackBerry (3,000 apps), Google’s Android software (around 10,000 apps) and, of course, Apple (85,000 apps).
Unlike competing app stores, the Marketplace doesn’t yet have a Web site, so you can browse apps only on your phone. Still, the lineup of apps includes some well-known offerings for a fee, like Pac-Man ($7) and Scrabble ($8), as well as the usual complement of free social networking apps, like Facebook and MySpace.
One other benefit to owning a Windows phone is the My Phone service. For no charge, My Phone automatically stores your phone’s content on a password-protected Web site. From there, you can more easily post photos to your social network accounts or manage contact lists, for instance.
You can also retrieve all that critical data if your phone somehow is wiped clear in a major system crash, like the one this month that deleted all the data from T-Mobile’s Sidekick devices. That data had been stored on the servers of Danger, a business owned by — drumroll please — Microsoft.
Mr. Sullivan said the My Phone service was operated on Microsoft’s internal servers, rather than those of an affiliated Microsoft company, and was therefore as reliable as the company’s Hotmail system.
For many, the My Phone service will be most valuable when they lose their phone. For $5, Microsoft will give you a week and a handful of tools to find or lock your device. Even if the phone was set to vibrate, for instance, My Phone will force it to ring.
Here, Microsoft throws its longtime users a bone. The My Phone service is available even to those with the previous two versions of Windows Mobile.
Speaking of which: if I were an existing Windows Mobile user, I would consider buying a new 6.5 device, but only with a one-year contract.
The device would cost more, but I would at least put myself in a better position to upgrade to Windows Mobile 7.0, which may appear next year, and will, I hope, include enough improvements to make the Windows logo a more meaningful feature on a phone.
Quick Calls
Jabra, a mobile audio specialist, has unveiled a new headset, the Stone. It has no forward-pointing microphone boom, so it’s much stealthier than competing headsets, and the microphone still picks up your voice fairly well. The carrying case doubles as a portable charger ($130, at att.com, starting Nov. 8). ... Let’s Talk, an online mobile phone retailer, recently began offering Future Proof, a free service that guarantees to buy back your phone for a predetermined price, in case you want to upgrade to the next great thing. ... TED Talks, the lectures from the well-known TED Conference, are now available on Google Android phones (the Mother TED app), free. On iPhones, look for the TED app.
